NaNoWriMo - Lessons learned
So I didn’t win NaNoWriMo. Part of me is upset about this, but the rest of me is proud that I increased my output nearly 200% from 2010 (last year I only got to 10,000 words). One of the things that helped me a lot was creating an outline beforehand (though it was very, very skeletal and loose); last year I was discovery writing.
Here are the lessons I’ve learned this year:
1. Research! Especially if I’m doing historical fiction again, I need to research the time period and people and events surrounding it much more than I did this year before November starts. This is one of the areas that caused me to fall down a lot.
2. Outline MORE. My outline this year was very succinct and captured only the most bare bones details. I think that had I worked on the outline much longer ahead of time and really worked out the story ahead of time, I would get tripped up less. A lot of the month was spent figuring out the story rather than actually writing it.
3. Start prep work early; maybe even in January. If I’m to follow my other lessons above, I should probably start working on the outline and the research as early as possible. It takes me a while for an idea to coalesce, and for me to spiral down in on it. It forms organically in my head and not always in order. I’ll get ah-ha moments when I know the right elements have come together, and I feel uncomfortable and troubled when I know it’s not working (though I couldn’t tell you what or why).
I do want to finish my novel attempt, but I think I’m going to let it rest for a bit and write some short stories. In a huge break from Regency England, I’ve got an idea for a present day weird fiction story and a sci-fi story.
Update from the depths
Hello! General life stuff has gotten in the way of posting. I have decided to pay more attention to social media after an unintentional break from most everything (twitter, tumblr, facebook).
What have I been busy with this month? I’ve been taking part in NaNoWriMo for the third or fourth time, can’t remember which, and I have been a lot more successful! You can see my wordcount widget below. The most I managed last year was 10,000 words, that that was a triumph. So far this year, I am over half way. While I may not “win,” depending on I can catch up or not, I am extremely proud of what I have accomplished. I’m also excited about this book, and am looking forward to finishing it.

There is a strange taboo in our society against ending something merely because it is not pleasant— life, love, a conversation, you name it, the etiquette is that you must begin in ignorance & persevere in the face of knowledge, & though I naturally believe that this is profoundly wrong it’s not nice to go around constantly offending people.

Stories you read when you’re the right age never quite leave you. You may forget who wrote them or what the story was called. Sometimes you’ll forget precisely what happened, but if a story touches you it will stay with you, haunting the places in your mind that you rarely ever visit.
This is the second of two illustrations I made for the Save the Date cards for the wedding of two of my friends. Also included are the lovely reference photos provided by the happy couple.
